On the 22nd of June, 2017, the Extensive Academic Conference of the Laboratory of the Bioresources of the World Ocean took place in the assembly hall of the Kerch Branch (“YugNIRO”); it was run by the Head of the Laboratory, A.K. Zaytsev. The report of the Senor Research Officer of the Laboratory, Sergey Rebik, was presented at the conference; it covered his work during the Patagonian and Antarctic toothfish fishing operations in the CCALMR area and the Southwestern Atlantic around Antarctic.
In October, 2016, S.T. Rebik among four experts from the laboratory, on the order of the Federal Agency for Fishery, was assigned as an international scientific observer to the Antarctic, in the area under the responsibility of the Antarctic Commission (CCAMLR). From the 1st of December, 2016, to the 6th of January, 2017, Sergey Rebik was working on the board of the Korean long-liner that was conducting deepwater fisheries of the Antarctic toothfish in the Ross Sea (Antarctic Pacific) along other 16 fisheries vessels from 8 states – CCAMLR members.
On the board of that vessel, S.T. Rebik, in collaboration with his colleague from another state, was performing the set of studies and observations provided by the CCAMLR codes and regulations. After the ban of fisheries in the Ross Sea was implemented, Sergey Rebik continued his scientific activity on the board of the same vessel, which moved to another fishing area, to the open waters of the area of Southwestern Atlantic around the Arctic, to the Scotia undersea bridge and Patagonian continental slope. There, S.T. Rebik worked on the Patagonian toothfish fishery till the end of June, 2017. All the studies and observations in the area were also being carried out according to the CCAMLR codes and regulations.
In his extensive report, Sergey Rebik presented the data on toothfish biology, as well as the biology of the species in by-catch, told about the special aspects of their distribution, and answered numerous questions of the participants. The data from his report will be used by CCAMLR for the development of scientific rationale for conservation of the Antarctic resources, as well as for continuation and development of rational fishing.
